The Historic Carson House, in collaboration with The Exploring Joara Foundation, is working towards uncovering the remains of the previous L-shaped house. Through meticulous archaeological work, a team of experts has discovered remnants 20 feet away from the main house. In their quest to gain a deeper understanding of the historical space, archaeologists have recently unearthed a remarkably preserved brick floor on the opposing side of the addition and pieces of the original foundation walls. The discovery has offered valuable insights into the construction techniques and materials used during the late 1700s. The next step involves locating the chimneys, which will shed further light on the layout and design of the past house.
We are designing a Visitor’s and Interpretive Center that will sit next to the historic home with a permanent exhibit exploring the broader context of the plantation and slavery in this region. Stay tuned this fall as construction begins.
